Profile

I have a strong instinct for finding what doesn’t add up, whether in a spreadsheet, a workflow, or a model’s output, and a genuine interest in working out why. My MSc thesis put that instinct to use on DeepSeek R1, and found that the model behaved differently in response to a hint without acknowledging the hint in its reasoning. This does not appear to be dishonesty so much as a plausible narrative constructed after the fact, which is a meaningful problem if chain-of-thought reasoning is being relied on as a genuine window into how a model reaches its answers.

Most of my career, including the parts that do not look like data science on paper, has involved the same underlying question: is this system doing what we think it is doing, and what happens to the people affected when it is not? I would like to keep asking that question somewhere it can make a practical difference.

I work best on problems without a clean answer yet, alongside people willing to get into the detail. I would rather work somewhere disagreement is productive and assumptions get challenged than somewhere everyone nods along.

About me

  • I am a Star Trek nerd. TNG vs VOY vs DS9 is one of my favourite discussions.
ᯓ★ It’s the same federation, being stress-tested in wildly different situations.
  • I knit, sew, crochet, bake, and grow spinach and flowers in my yard.
  • I was awarded “coffee drinker of the semester” in 2024. I still have the mug.
  • I played monsters and NPCs for a LARP group for several years, which led to building a roundhouse.
  • I cannot do spoonerisms at all. This has never once come up professionally.
